New 4K remastering of PITCH BLACK
Spent a few weeks on the Universal lot recently, working with a colorist on the remastering of PITCH BLACK. Arrow Films of London is spearheading this restoration timed to the film’s 20-year anniversary. (20 effin’ years? How is it possible?) So as of September 1, there’ll be a new UHD/4K version and an updated Blu-Ray, both derived from 4K scans of the original negative. This isn’t a case of the studio pumping out old product with new cover art — we went back to the source and did things right.
Going in, I had intended to pretty much match the vibe of the original release. But you know, once you get into it, you find yourself fucking around, making a few visual departures — and some corrections, too: The desire to improve your work apparently never ends, and when you get the chance, you pounce on it. Even if it’s two decades later.
Both editions hold both the Director’s Cut — the preferred cut, of course — as well as the shorter theatrical version. In addition, there’re new bonus material, including recent interviews with me, Claudia Black (Shazza), Rhiana Griffith (Jack), Peter Chiang (VFX maven), David Eggby (DP), Graeme Revell (composer). Haven’t seen any of those yet — the discs are still stacked on my desk, unwrapped — but especially looking forward to what Claudia has to say. Always an opinionated lady.
Peeking around the corner, soon I expect to have some news for all you faithful re RIDDICK 4: FURYA.
Be good, be safe.
